Isle of Skye Angling from Seal Haven Cottage
The Isle of Skye is well known for its fishing. Here we discuss both Sea and Freshwater Angling on Skye. Both types
of fishing are within easy reach of Seal Haven self catering Cottage.
Many visitors come to the Isle of Skye for the angling. Some of course are casual fishermen,
perhaps young families who are happy to spend a pleasant hour or so casting a spinner or a few flies into the sea,
from boat or shore. Others range from the enthusiastic amateur to the dedicated sportsmen and women who pursue
their hobby with endless patience and determination. The Isle of Skye caters for all shades of expertise and
interest in the sport of angling and provides the fisherman with beautiful background sights, sounds and smells of
nature to complement their time spent on river or seashore. I have yet to meet an angler who has had a bad day,
even when the fish were not biting.
Isle of Skye Sea Angling
The Isle of Skye has many places where good sea angling can be enjoyed. You can drive ten minutes or so from
Seal Haven cottage, to Neist point, the most westerly headland in Skye where you will find excellent rock fishing.
We will show you where to go on the rocks to have an excellent chance of finding mackerel in abundance. Other
species are plentiful such as pollack and perhaps cod in season. You don't need to have expensive equipment to
enjoy this form of fishing. I recall many years ago rock fishing at Neist. I had a 12 foot beachcaster rod, an
Ambassador mutiplier reel and a box full of lures and feathers. On this occasion there was a youngster of perhaps
fourteen years, fishing with very basic tackle. The young man hauled in fish after fish while I never got a bite. A
lesson learned! There are boat trips available where local boatmen will take you to their favourite fishing spots.
We will include links to them in our links page in due course.
Skye Freshwater Angling.
For freshwater angling you will be spoiled for choice. There are the waters controlled by The Portree Angling
Association, starting from about half an hours drive from Seal Haven cottage, where you will find the Storr Lochs,
near Portree, Association waters also offer excellent river fishing for salmon, sea trout and brown trout.
Permits are readily available in Portree. There are also numerous hill lochs where brown trout can be found and the
only cost is some effort in walking in to them. You can download a report, in pdf format, which discusses
The Hidden Lochs and rivers of Skye and Lochalsh, an informative
document from the site of the same name at http://www.skyeangling.org.uk. Some people like 'wild'
fishing, as did a guest that we had many years ago whose only tackle was his trout fly rod and casts
in his pocket. He would happily seek out the remotest lochs and pass his day in splendid solitude, searching
seldom fished waters for that elusive brown trout.
Book Choice - Fly Fishing From Scratch.
Click Here! - if you would like to see a book and videos devoted to the art of trout
fly fishing. Ideal for the learner but also a useful reference for the experienced angler. Casting

Skye Angling Tuition and Ghillie Services.
Angling tuition is available on the Isle of Skye, for the novice wanting a good grounding in the proper
techniques, and also the experienced fisherman needing to brush up his or her skills. Tuition with a local
fisherman is also an excellent way to become familiar with the local waters and is worth the time and cost. We
include links at our Skye Cottage Links page, to websites where local
ghillies offer their services, and also to the local angling associations. Tight lines.
Special Offer.
When you come to Seal Haven Cottage, and wish to purchase a fishing permit, we will discount the day
permits by 50% and the weekly permits by up to 33½%. Ask us for details.
Stop press: On 29th march 2010, cottage visitors caught the first
pollack of the season, at Neist point. Four fish up to 3lb each and a good day out. Well done William
and Gail.
