Skye is rich in eating places.
Here we concentrate on those closest to Seal Haven self catering cottage.
Eating Out
We are spoiled for choice when it comes to eating out. In Skinidin we are particularly lucky to have the
world renowed Three Chimneys Restaurant just five minutes walk from the front door of Seal Haven. The current
owners, Eddie and Shirley Spear, have been preparing outstanding Scottish food from locally sourced ingredients for
over twenty years. In 1990 they won Scottish Restaurant of the Year Award. Since then they have followed this up
with a string of accolades and awards too numerous to mention. A high point was being voted 28th best restaurant in
the world in 2002. In 2007 they won an EatScotland GOLD Award, one of only six in the country, ranking them
alongside two of Scotland's best Michelin Starred Restaurants.
Consider walking the few hundred metres from Seal Haven to the Three Chimneys Restaurant on a nice
evening. You will hear the sounds of sea birds and perhaps seals barking. You will smell the fresh sea air or
perhaps the aroma of the heather coming off the hill beside you. Pause on the shore and view the loch, islands and
hills before entering the charming interior of the Three Chimneys, looking forward to a relaxing evening and a
culinary experience to remember. Visit the Three Chimneys for sample menus and other interesting
information.
In the village of Dunvegan, a short five or six minutes drive away, you will find the The Old School
Restaurant. This, as the name suggests, was the original village school. As well as the best of Scottish cooking to
a very high standard you will enjoy the heat from the open fire that is kept well stoked up. The 'Old School' is a
worthy complement to the above mentioned Three Chimneys.
Those of you who love seafood will enjoy the Lochbay Seafood Restaurant. The journey, from Seal Haven holiday
cottage, will take you twenty minutes or so by car. You will drive to the village of Stein on the Waternish
peninsula. Stein is an old fishing village with a charm all of its own. Facing west, it enjoys the setting sun and
on a summer evening can be quite stunning. The small, cozy restaurant serves all manner of seafood cooked to
perfection. Get more details at their website.
Eating In
The three restaurants described are only a sample of the choices available to you. There are many other good
eating places but we mention the ones that we are most familiar with and are relatively close at hand. At Seal
Haven cottage you may wish to do your own cooking and simply relax and enjoy the view from the door of your holiday
cottage. If you would like us to source local meats such as venison, wild boar and organic beef, or perhaps locally
grown organic herbs and salads, then please let us know in advance and we will order for you. These are subject to
availability and season. We have a local source of such delicacies as home smoked bacon and sausages. You can visit
the producer and perhaps order some to take home with you. A visit to the pier in Dunvegan will often produce
a basket of live prawns, to cook in the cottage, perhaps even free of charge, when the boats are seeking other
species. You can also arrange to collect or have delivered, freshly caught lobster, either cooked or
live. This again is subject to availibility and season.
Your culinary choices are wide when you come to a Skye cottage. Bon appetit.
